I.D (Doug) Macdonald, MBA, CPA, CMA, R.F.P.

A Westerner, Doug received his Bachelor of Arts (Economics) from the University of Victoria in 1969, then completed his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance & Marketing from the University of British Columbia (UBC). After lecturing at the University of Saskatchewan for a year, Doug returned to Vancouver to found Macdonald, Shymko & Company Ltd. (MSC) with David Shymko in 1972.  Shortly thereafter, he earned his CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation and, in 1986, became the first person in Canada to receive the prestigious R.F.P. (Registered Financial Planner) designation. He is also registered as a Real Estate Agent in British Columbia and is registered under MSC’s Portfolio Manager status.

Doug was an active member of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners (CAFP) from 1984 to 2002. He served as both Director and President of the Pacific Chapter, and as National Director, President and Chairperson. Doug also served for 10 years on the CAFP Board of Regents, the majority of that time as Chairperson. In 1992, Doug was awarded the “Member of the Year Award” for his “exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to the profession.”

In his ongoing commitment to the profession, Doug rejoined the CAFP Board of Regents in 2002, and advocated for the newly created Institute of Advanced Financial Planners (IAFP) to administrate the R.F.P. in consideration of the designation’s integrity.  He served as IAFP Chairperson for its inaugural year in 2002, and remains a Past Chairperson. Doug served as Chairperson of the IAFP’s Board of Regents from 2002 to 2010.

In February 2006, Doug received the esteemed Advisor Edge’s Career Achievement award, which honours an individual whose leadership has been integral in developing the Canadian financial services industry, and the skill and ethical development of its professionals, in the interest of protecting consumers.

On June 2, 2016, Doug was honoured at the Canadian Wealth Professional Awards dinner with an Award for Lifetime Achievement, an “Award of excellence in honour of outstanding achievement by an individual Financial Advisor. This award recognizes lifetime achievement or outstanding contribution of an individual to Canadian financial planning industry as a whole.”

Each summer, Doug can be found at the Lake of the Woods in Ontario.  He enjoys playing the occasional round of golf, and spends his winters curling and attending the theatre.
